A site called “Awesomeology” would not be complete without this video on it. Look how close these guys come to smacking into the ground at about a hundred miles per hour.

Wow. Just wow. If I ever get diagnosed with some sort of incurable disease and the doctors give me just about a week or so to live…PLEASE someone remind me to try this:

4 Solanum Tuberosum November 14, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Dang… That is… beyond words! I wanna basejump! Well, I would if I didn’t have an irrational fear of heights. I would regurgitate my stomach lining if I did that.

5 MoneyMoose November 14, 2007 at 9:05 pm

That looks amazingly fun. I need to try that.

6 willy November 14, 2007 at 11:31 pm

mary f**king mother of christ! Has to be one of the most seriously brilliant feats of human endevour I’ve ever seen…. who needs Holywood’s digital b**tardisation of the truth when you’ve got guys like this?!!?

8 Tom November 15, 2007 at 11:08 am

I was told it’s Chamonaix in France, btw – can anyone confirm this?

9 Awesomeology November 15, 2007 at 6:28 pm

I did some Googling (especially Google Images), and I’d say that Chamonix is the likely location of this video. If anybody knows for sure, let us know!

10 LLLL November 16, 2007 at 10:25 am

True adrenalin sports. Love it!

11 angee November 16, 2007 at 2:26 pm

14 Bernie November 17, 2007 at 5:42 am

Wow. I’m impressed that in my brief span of life, I actually think I know someone who might seriously think about trying this. I’ll keep you posted….

15 Vítor Oliveira November 17, 2007 at 8:12 am

hi, this is awesome!

by the way, someone know the name of the music that is on the video?

16 Awesomeology November 17, 2007 at 1:16 pm

marius – thanks for answering that question for all of us!

17 manly November 18, 2007 at 6:58 am

These guys are pussies! We do this on fire, at night, and with scorpions in our underwear.

18 Tink November 21, 2007 at 7:42 am

That was amazing. I so wanna try that out! Must be an awesome feeling gliding through the air like that.

You can thank flying squirrels for base jumping!

19 sick November 21, 2007 at 10:52 am

its from the ski movie seven sunny days… i own it, i think its probably the coolest part of the whole movie

20 DG November 21, 2007 at 1:15 pm

I think this is faked. No one can have that
much control to glide inches away from a road switchback while holding their arms out in a flying squirrel suit, even if they were crazy enough to do it. Also look at the start jump, backwards and in perfect synchronization. Looks like digital artwork to me.

21 Tink November 21, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Um, yeah you can. They use thermal vortex’s to give them enough power and air to glide. Just like large sea birds. Or large land birds.

Olypmpic divers jump backwards and in perfect syncronization, albeit without the gliding afterwards. I dont see how syncronization can make this a fake video.

Plus there have documentries about this kind of stuff on extreme sports channels and the national geographic channel.

news.nationalgeographic.com/…/21240738.html

22 Tink November 21, 2007 at 2:31 pm

Its not fake.

23 matelot November 21, 2007 at 4:46 pm

are they actually airborne at any time or just falling at all times ?

24 Geoff November 21, 2007 at 7:54 pm

Hey, These guys are flying in squirrel suits. The squirrel suit is just a low performing hang glider — looks like 1:1 glide, or perhaps 2:1, so they are descending at 30-50 mph while moving forward at ~75-100 mph.
But why not do this with more performance and control? If you are in even the simplest hangglider, you leap off the cliff and fly under total control, skimming next to the cliffs at up to 80mph — but you can also slow down to 20 mph, and go up in the updraft, and fly around all day, instead of just for a couple of minutes. And you can land on your feet, you don’t thave to throw a parachute! http://www.ushpa.aero

25 kcaldwel November 22, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Thermal vortexes?!! Yeah, right. Hang gliders and paragliders have about the minimum performance level you need to use thermals: sink rates of 200 feet per minute or less; glide ratios of 8:1 or better (they move forward at lest 10 feet for every foot they descend).

The wing suits fall all the time, at a minimum of downward velocity of about 40 mph. The maximum thermal climb rates are typically 15 mph (1500 fpm), although very rare thermals may be up to 30 mph (3000 fpm). The wing suits have a max glide ratio of about 2:1. They move forward 2 feet for every foot they descend.

31 Polymath November 28, 2007 at 8:07 pm

“Got a bit boring” he said. Wow thats something that will give me the shits, but would be awsome to have tha balls to do it.

32 drez November 29, 2007 at 8:54 pm

That is so awesome.

33 amyluya November 30, 2007 at 1:39 pm

Man’s ever continuing quest to fly like the birds. I wonder if the Wright brothers ever tried anything like this?

I am amazed, and they really do look like flying squirrels!

34 Kimonar December 1, 2007 at 2:29 am

That’s god damn amazing. I wish I had the guts to do that, ’cause it looks like so much fun!

And why does every god damn video with something amazing like this HAVE to have someone stating it’s fake? Or even the blindingly obvious fake… It’s really annoying. >:(

35 Mary December 1, 2007 at 2:55 pm

I just wonder though, who volunteered to try these suits out for the first time? These guys are brave but using the suit for the first time not knowing if it’ll work or not..PRICELESS!

36 cAT December 1, 2007 at 4:00 pm

DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG PLAYING???

37 kreg December 3, 2007 at 4:00 am

They are called wingsuits and grew out of skydiving into the base community not squirlsuits.

38 Bominka December 5, 2007 at 6:22 pm

That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen….especially the backwards flip. Somebody, PLEASE post the name of that song!!!

39 Ingamar December 6, 2007 at 11:25 am

40 Ingamar December 6, 2007 at 11:55 am

ANYONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG?????

41 Awesomeology December 6, 2007 at 12:01 pm

If you look through the comments, people have been asking that for the last 2 weeks. I guess no one knows…

42 champalle laurent December 9, 2007 at 2:08 pm

if I want to kill myself I'll use a glock 45.

43 Mike December 19, 2007 at 10:29 pm

The song is “Under Man” by Sackcloth Fashion. It is an instrumental version. You can find it at the iTunes store.

You can find some really cool stills of Espen Fadnes, Shane McConkey, JT Holmes and Loic Jean-Albert from an upcoming production at the Matchsticks Productions website. http://mspfilms.com/gallery/950

44 Bill December 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm

45 L.P. April 26, 2008 at 12:55 am

its in Norway

46 Allan June 26, 2008 at 7:56 am

The guy above who said it is a fake wins. Seriously guys open your eyes!

47 David August 10, 2008 at 4:40 pm

That’s a very cool video, but… In spite of all the comments claiming this is real, there’s no way people can fly like this. Flying squirrel suits? There’s not enough wind resistance there, those guys would smack right into those rocks. Especially near the end of the video, when they show the guy gliding over rocks almost horizontally. His descent rate would soon overtake any horizontal motion and he’d be pizza.

If I’m wrong then I’m going to believe in Santa Claus again, because this is a magical world.

Still very cool looking.

48 David August 10, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Yikes, I’ve just done more research and it might be real! So where’s fucking Santa Clause been all these years?

I need to find out more, because I just can’t see how this is physically possible.
